A Dune Hint

In Anteac and Luyseyal’s audience with Leto, Leto begins by considering and rejecting the possibility that Luyseyal is a Face Dancer mimic.  It’s interesting to read the text with an eye for all the evidence that Leto quickly changes his mind.  It’s also interesting to note and consider all the other features of the scene that have a bearing on the issue of images:  Museum Fremen, False Sietch, ritual substitutes.

The Suicide Sockpuppets

May 28, 2008 at 3:54 am UTC (Uncategorized) (, , )

Binks of FreeMarkSteyn.com has passed along a report that the beautiful jackasses harrassing MacLean’s and Mark Steyn are having trouble getting hired as attorneys.  Binks and his sources speculate that the Suicide Sockpuppets have hurt their job prospects with a public show of meddlesomeness and ignorance.

Their opinion is plausible, as far as it goes. However, the two women in the group who are fronting for the Canadian Islamic Congress are special cases. As must surely be known to every muslim in the Umma, the behavior of the two women is offensive to God and His Messenger (PBUH), and it is on account of this that God may be already chastising them.  For they have set out to take jobs that would put them on a level with men, and often even allow them to lord it over men, despite being women.  Moreover, their clothing is shameful, inasmuch as they dare even to appear on television with nothing covering their hair or face.  I say “nothing,” but one of them did have her face covered with rouge.  That same one exposed herself shamefully by wearing a plunging neckline; I don’t know why she didn’t simply appear on television naked.  Both of the women are storing up for themselves a painful punishment from God, and they cannot expect to escape it while they continue in their feminism and immodesty. Allah is watching, ladies.

Conservation of Critical Effort

Those who pretend to make a critique of Mark Steyn’s views, without having read his America Alone, must content themselves with a little praise for having saved effort.  Even that little praise is best qualified by the consideration that they could have made an even greater savings.

Senator Obama’s Hatred

May 24, 2008 at 12:54 am UTC (Uncategorized) ()

In a headline, HotAir linked to a post at Q: The Florida Politics Blog, in which the writer passes along a report that Senator Barack Obama publicly accused two commentators, highly regarded on the American right, of being responsible for a year-over-year doubling of ”hate crimes” against Hispanic people.  Yes, of course the accusation was loaded with weasel words; probably very few people are completely shameless.  It seems safest for those two commentators to understand the accusation as evidence that Senator Obama hates them and wants to hurt them.

Canadian “human rights” complainants could have gone on forever, hating people and their opinions, but loving their money, if it weren’t for those meddling kids and their dog!  Hey, Elmo, here’s a scoobie snack!

A Dune Clue

May 19, 2008 at 4:05 am UTC (Dune) (, , , , )

The Dune series seems, in part, to be Frank Herbert’s exploration of themes and images he encountered in Plato’s dialogue The Sophist.  Herbert’s connection to Plato’s Sophist may be partly by way of Heidegger, who wrote a commentary on The Sophist.

A Dune Clue

I think Plato’s character Theaetetus is in some ways Frank Herbert’s model for the Face Dancers in the Dune series.  I wonder if I’m the only person in the world who suspects this.

“Hey! Appeaser!”

What’s one of the rules we learned about name-calling in school?  If someone shouts “Hey!  Ugly!” or “Hey! [your worst attribute here]!” in a crowded hallway, don’t immediately turn around as if he’s just called you by name.  The Dark Lord of the Sith is laughing at the American Presidential candidate Barack Obama, who just got played by President Bush.

Israel’s 60th Anniversary

Mark Steyn considers Israel’s future.

Besides all the other reasons the Americans have to support Israel against her enemies, there’s the American experience since 9/11.  The muslims who hate Israel, America, and western liberties have seemed bolder and more aggressive since 9/11.  Imagine what jackasses they’ll become if they’re allowed such a huge victory as the destruction of Israel.

Freedom of Speech Is Reassuring by Contrast

May 16, 2008 at 4:25 pm UTC (Uncategorized) (, )

I admire people who have the patience and skill to deal with threats to their liberty and wellbeing by “going through proper channels,” that is, to do so politically or “socially.”  Imagine how things will change if such  ”proper channels” as speaking freely, publishing freely, and striving peaceably to challenge unjust but “settled” law are closed to intelligent, spirited, politically skilled men.  Without meaning to imply anything about Ezra Levant himself, but using his talents and spirit by way of example, I urge one to consider how admirably but frighteningly dangerous some such men will become if they may no longer strive for their ends by public persuasion through speech.
